If a mite infestation does not get treated, serious side affects can occur. These include permanent hearing loss due to damage to the ear canal and ear drum, skin disease and ear infections.
Non prescription medication is available. This does take twenty one to thirty days of treatment though. This is due to the fact that it does not kill mite eggs. It is most often in a liquid form.
There are prescription treatments available from veterinarians. These can be a drops or a shot. This type of medication only takes ten to fourteen days since it does kill off mite eggs as well as adults.
For mites that are located outside the ear canal, flea and tick medication, such as dips and shampoos, kill mites on the body.
For households with multiple animals, all animals need to be treated at the same time. This is due to the fact that ear mites are highly contagious. Treating all pets at once helps reduce the risk of recurring infestation.
When an animal has recurring infestations, severe symptoms or prescription medication needs to be obtained, the pet needs to be taken to a veterinarian. Repeat infestations can be the result of not treating all animals in the household at the same time.
